In two weeks, we will inaugurate our

new "Eco-accommodation"; thermal solar for instance and also a small botanic garden with endemic and autochtonous plants.

Yesterday we planted 37 endemic plants from the azores at "Casa do Flores" helped by a group of German teenagers who are crossing the Atlantic on

a sailing boat called "Thor Heyerdahl"... They have make Lajes do Pico more green... for sure the ocean will be very blue on the way back home !

When you manage a company , it is normal to look for new markets.

In the Azores, some whale watching operators promote oversea the Shark swimming activity, but:

- Does this activity sustentable for the Azorean “soft ecotourim image” and whale watching marketing ?

- Does the very special clients who book for such adrenalin experience will bring some thing economicly, socialy and environmentaly positive for the archipelago?

- Does this activity without risk for the client who want to swim with shark, what will happen in case of accident for the whole Azorean touristic industy?

- Does this activity with no risk for the people who are swimming with dolphins, I wish it will have differents zones...

- Does this activity go together with the fisherman activity ?

Finally

- Doesn’ t the Azorean authority have to supervise and maybe legalize such bussiness ?

This offer is limitate to EEC resident and the employment contracts are done under Portugueses labory legislation.

Since the 2008 season following a request from Dr. Jonathan Gordon we started the ETID, the Espaço Talassa sperm whale photo-id data collection, not with the purpose of creating a new catalogue, but a photo-id online databank opened to all: curious, whale watchers, students, researchers… where it will be possible to download photos, as well as to include them in already existing catalogues, the reference in this field being the catalogue created by IFAW, Dr. Jonathan Gordon and Dra. Lisa Steiner, in the Azores in 1987.

If you are a regular client or a regular visitor of our website, we are glad to let you know that with the help of Marie Guilpin, a St. Andrews university master student, the effort of the team regarding this 2010 season data collection is already online, so, you can visit the link on our website and if you went out with us this season, by searching the date and time you were at sea you can check the whales you saw and even match them with your own pictures.

Also, this season, after two and half season’s of data collection, curiosity started growing and we decided to do a simple analyses on the whales we id so that we had an idea on the number of different animals identified by us, how are they and how often they visited the south of Pico on the last season´s.

So, from this analyses we saw than 761 photos were taken by members of our team and whale watchers, this 761 photos translate in 235 individual whales, from witch 77 were sighted more than once, so next time you visit us, you can see on an album the whales sighted more than once and also some of the ones sighted only once.

August 12th, 11h30, Pedro phone me, they are with a group of 50 Stenos (Steno bredanensis)...

Checking the azorean official sighting list, the last time that this species was seen in the archipelago was in 1995 !

15 years latter, a first record for the Espaço Talassa team, summer 2010 is really special !

Good for our ego, beautiful photos... but the question is "Why this guys are back ?", well the sea temp is over than 25 º, is it the explanation or part of it ?

Once upon a blue!

The Azorean people since many years look at the sea searching for whales, in the beginning looking only for sperm whales witch they hunted, but since those times there are memories of bigger “fishes” with “blows like towers” that were sighted from land, but because they were not the sperm whales they were searching for, they were not of much interest.

When the Espaço Talassa team started going to the sea, 21 years ago the opportunity came to go sea closely one of those “big fishes” imagine the surprise on the discovery that was nothing more than a blue whale, the biggest animal ever to life on heart, and this was how the first sighting of a Blue whale ocorred on the Azores, by 29 may 1997.

After that, sightings of other baleen whales like the Fin, Sei, Bryde, Humpback and even the Minke occurred on this waters during the months of april and may, since there every season during this months we fulfil the dreams of many that want to sea the oceans biggest creatures life on their natural environment.

Every season during the months of April and May, the baleen whales are migrating from the warm waters in the south, were they mate and have their young’s, to the cold north waters were they feed. During this migration they pass in the Azores and that is when we get to see them here in south of Pico island.

Because there is some food availability in these waters, they tend to stay a few days around here. The 2010 season started with a month of April with a regular number of sightings of baleen whales, but then in May something extraordinary happened, we started seeing them almost everyday, and we were so surprised that we decided to make a small statistic analyses with the data that we collect every day.

The results are shown on the graphics below, one regarding the month of April and the other the month of may for the last 10 seasons (we collect this data since 1989, but only the last 10 years were analysed because before that the effort on this months was much smaller). The analyses consist on the number of times each species of baleen whales was sighted each year; also there is a line with the number of trips to the sea to give an idea on the effort.

Regarding the month of April we can see that we have been sighting baleen whales every season on the last ten years, doe the numbers of each species change a bit.

If we analyse species we can see that the 2006 season was the best regarding Blue and Fin whales sightings, 2001 was very strong on Humpback whales, 2004 on Sei whales and 2002 on Minke whales. And looking at the present season we can see that it’s a good season, but not that much different from other years like 2002, 2006, and 2007.

And we can see that this numbers are not dependent on the number of trips, since in some years with less trips we see more animals that in years with more trips (compare 2004 with 2006, for example).

But when we look at the month of May, we can see that specially regarding Blue and Fin whales this is definitely the best season of the last 10 years, and again it has not to due with the number of trips to sea. On 2004 we sighted more Humpback whales, in 2008 more Sei whales and in 2006 more Minke whales.

But the month of May is not over yet and we have no idea of what is still to happen on the months to come.

The reasons for this extraordinary amount of whales around are not fully understood by us, according to the knowledge we have on this animals we can infer that it is probably due to a higher amount of krill than usual, but because we do not develop dedicated research on the food availability here we can’t be sure.

On the year of 1998 Espaço Talassa started identifying Blue whales for Richard sears, and took the picture of the first Blue whale match from the Azores to Iceland, this season, Richard was here and during his stay, until the 15 of May, 15 different Blue whales were identified, at the moment this number is still increasing.

First sighting from our team of a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle “Lepidochelys kempii” by May 14th around 5 PM, 2 miles south of Pontas Negras, Pico Island… of course !

The animal was covered with gooseneck barnacles and sea weed. Sensible skipper Pedro has removed all the parasites.

Pedro thinks that he has seen another similar sea turtle, last week when he was snorkling by the “Castelete”, bigger than the one from Ponta Negras who was 30 cm of lenght.

Lepidochelys kempii

The Kemp's ridley sea turtle was named after Richard M. Kemp, a fisherman and naturalist from Key West, Florida, who first submitted the species for identification in 1880.
It is rarely sighted in the Azores archipelago

Size 24 to 36 inches long

Diet Crabs, fishes and an array of mollusks

Lifespan At least 30 years, and possibly 50 years or more

Range Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Atlantic Seaboard

Habitat Coastal areas, nesting on beaches

Predators Foxes, weasels, cats, dogs, raccoons, crabs and more eat eggs

and hatchlings. Sharks and other large fishes prey on juveniles and adults.

In 1947, about 42,000 turtles nested in an arribada in Rancho Nuevo, Mexico.

Conservation status Critically Endangered Kemp's ridleys face major threats from accidental catch in fishing gear and are currently the most endangered sea turtle in the world.

Before yesterday I was annoucing the begining of our whale watching operation for 2010 like this "Four days at sea, four days with sperm whale", now I can say five days at sea with sperm whale, 5 different species of dolphins and... Orca ! definitively the water south of Pico are unique.
I wish that our visitor can feel it with pleasure and respect !

Pagamento de taxa de renovação de licença de observação de cetáceos.

2.760 euros é um cheque que me vai custar muito a assinar.

Não pela quantia, apesar desta representar mais de 50 cêntimos por cliente embarcado, mas porque este imposto das baleias é injusto.

Injusto, porque arrecadado nos cofres do estado, será sem dúvida dirigido a qualquer outro fim que não o bem da minha actividade e dos cetáceos... para cimentar o litoral açoriano, por exemplo.

Injusto, sobretudo, porque a ideia de instituir uma licença de “observação de baleias nos Açores” foi desnaturada, traída ao longo dos 5 últimos anos.

Voltando um pouco ao passado, alguns deverão ainda lembrar-se de que estive entre aqueles que lutaram pela existência desta licença. Fui então criticado por isso. Nessa perspectiva, participei, mandatado pelas companhias existentes na altura, em diversas reuniões com os responsáveis políticos e científicos do arquipélago: a minha ideia era, em suma, “a defesa de uma observação de cetáceos de qualidade, respeitadora, elitista, onde a importância não estivesse no número de pessoas embarcadas, mas sim nas divisas que essas pessoas trouxessem para o arquipélago, utilizando a imagem das baleias mais do que utilizar as baleias à nossa imagem!

Não ponho em causa a importância da Portaria n.º 5/2004 (imposto das baleias), mas, com seriedade, analisemos o que resta dessa lei, modificada ao sabor de influências políticas e do apetite de certos operadores...

Em resumo:

Empresas foram vendidas sem que para o efeito tivessem que provar um mínimo de actividade e outras conseguiram fazer modificar a lei da república sobre lotações e instituir uma excepção açoriana, sem mais nem menos...
Houve embarcações operando com excesso de lotação durante vários anos, com a benção das autoridades, sobretudo em S.Miguel.
Porquê preocuparmo-nos com isso quando outras embarcações operam regularmente nos dias de hoje com excesso de lotação, sem rol da tripulação e por conseguinte sem contratos de trabalho.
Paquetes de vários milhares de toneladas vendem e fazem observação na zona sem serem questionadas pelas autoridades.
Pior, operam com embarcações matriculadas, sem licença “baleia”, mas sob a capa de um marketing de “observação da vida marinha” ou sea watching!!! Algumas dessas embarcações pertencem a sociedades que no entanto possuem já vários barcos legalizados. Pude até ver um barco escola passar diante de uma das minhas embarcações.
O cúmulo é quando autorizações de “audio-visual” ou científicas são dadas a empresas/embarcações que não chegam a ter licença de observação... o cúmulo do cúmulo ainda está para vir, quando licenças especiais forem dadas a embarcações de pesca.
Não é raro ver 10 nadadores simultâneamente na água com os golfinhos ou pseudo-profissionais nadar na companhia de cachalotes ou então, baleias azuis.

Aprendi durante estes 20 anos de trabalho que denunciar abusos, uma falta ou uma infracção às autoridades (Inspecção do Trabalho, Direcção Regional do Ambiente, Direcção Regional do Turismo, Capitania do Porto) não serve senão para ganhar inimigos, na medida em que pouco ou nenhum controlo é efectuado e sanções concretizadas.

Será tudo isto somente falta de meios ou/e falta de vontade de sanear todo um sector turístico que anda à deriva?

Para ser politicamente correcto e também porque não tenho alternativa, pagarei a dívida daquilo que defendi noutros tempos... um imposto baleia... mas isso está-me custando … 2.760 euros.

Paradise and Low cost

Please don't sign the petition "low cost for the Azores".
There is a big confusion here.
The question is: Do we want to allow the access to the archipel to the mass or do we want to travel cheaper ? ... I say Yes for the low price for Azorean resident but who visit us has to pay the true price... do we really want to sell off the paradise ?

Fraser's dolphin, Lagenodelphis hosei, are in the Azores... good or bad news ?

The Espaço Talassa team - thanks to Pedro Madruga's photograhs - records the presence of the Fraser's dolphin, Lagenodelphis hosei, (male and femelle) for the first time in the Azorean waters.
In the past five years the Espaço Talassa team has already recorded the precence of 3 species never referenced in the archipelago:
- The Bryde's whale, Balaenoptera edeni
- The Blainville's beaked whale, Mesoplodon densirostris
- The Long-finned pilot whale, Globicephala melas
On August 22nd around 10AM a group of approximatively 50 Fraiser's dolphins was sighted 3 miles south of São Joâo do Pico (the village of Genuíno Madruga, the Pedro's father). The behaviour of the group was not very sociable swimming away from our boats.

While clients and skippers were happy of this unexpected encounter, the question is : What is this guy doing in the Azores ? The known north limit of its distribution is more than 800 miles south (1 400 kms).... but there are still some people who say that the "global changing" is a joke !

By the way, Pico Mountian is beautiful this morning... I wish you a nice day.

LE PONTA DELGADA EST MORT... VIVE LE PONTA DELGADA *

La vie est faite de paradoxes paraît’il, la mienne n’échappe pas à la règle !

Comment puis je parler d’économie durable, de tourisme responsable, de “soft encounter” avec dauphins et baleines alors que je passe ma vie à mettre des gens dans des avions ?

Le transport et sutout le transport aérien est responsable d’une grande partie des gaz à effet de serre, (pas seulement le CO2, il y a bien pire), aujourd’hui 100% des personnes qui visite l’archipel utilise ce moyen (peu écolo)... parce qu’il n’ont pas le choix.

Allez! Pour pour me donner bonne conscience, parce que je pense qu’elles seront pas entendues, voici 3 suggestions que je laisse à votre appréciation:

- 1/ Sensibiliser les personnes qui nous visitent au fait que voyager n’est pas une activité sans impact sur l’environnement. L’archipel des Açores est en condensé le revelateur du modèle vers lequel tend l’humanité. On y touche ici plus facilement le pouvoir de la nature, mais aussi sa fragilité lorsque la biodiversité disparaît... faisons leur par exemple planter des arbres indigènes.
Tirons les leçons de ce qui s’est passé sur l’île de Pâques

- 2/ Donner du temps à ces visiteurs d’aprécier les îles, en les invitant à rester au minimum une semaine sur l’archipel et/ou 3 nuits sur chaque île, les modeles touristiques comme les tourismes de congrés, incentives, longs weekend, circuits Açoriens, promotions de vol charter ( ha le modele suédois !) sont à bannir. Sans aller jusqu’a interdire la permanence pour un touriste à moins de 7 nuits (cela existe sur certaines destinations), il est politiquement possible de taxer les courts séjours et d’alléger fiscalement les opérateurs qui proposent des séjours de moyenne durée.
- 3/ Et surtout , rétablir une liaison maritime régulière Portugal continental/Açores ( j’écris Açores, pas São Miguel), le bateau est 18 fois moins polluant que l’avion, les bateaux de croisière actuels sont capables d’effectuer cette traversée en moins de 40 heures...le transport maritime...rien que du bonheur,
o Tout d’abord prendre le temps, les touristes sont en vacances finalement! J’ai débarqué pour la première fois aux Açores, c’était en 1987, un jour de brume (J’ai tout de suite compris la notion de “Ilhas de bruma”), j’ai senti la végétation exubérante de l’île “Lila” avant de voir se dévoiler à la proue de “Tyl le mutin” mon voilier, la merveilleuse solouhette des “Ilhéus das Cabras” puis doucement presque sensuellement celle du Monte Brazil encore résonnant de cette nuit de São Joãninhas .Quel contraste aujourd’hui lorsqu’à bord d’un A310 brimbalant, en compagnie de cette merveilleuse collation offerte par la TAP, je me demande si ce tube d’aluminium ailé et mal odorant sera capable ou non d’aligner la piste et si mes bagages auront suivis
o Avoir de l’espace, découvrir des îles, avoir comme horizon le bleu de la mer Açorienne c’est en priorité ce que recherchent les citadins au ventre plein qui nous visitent. Rien de plus violent après une semaine de treck autour des volcans de l’Atlantide que de devoir partager l’intimité olfactive dans le confort d’un siège d’avion penser pour des nains, les cris de l’homo sapiens volant à mes côtés, et qui n’a pas été vraiment prévenu de la sportivité de nos aéroports... Oui j’ai peur de l’avion ! mais surtout je préfère m’imaginer en train de prendre l’apéritif au bord de la piscine de la plage arrière d’un paquebot, avec comme toile de fond un coucher de soleil sur l’Atlantique et des dauphins comme guide vers l’archipel attendu.
o De répondre à l’attente de nombreux de nos clients qui préferent le bateau pour des raisons environnementales, celles décritent plus haut et aussi parce qu’ils peuvent embarquer plus de poids (cela à son importance lorsque l’on fait de la plongée, par exemple).
o De rentabiliser les installations portuaires en cours d’adaptation de créer de l’emploi autour des ces ports et de déservir plus démocratiquement le coeur de l’archipel, le triangle. Le coût de ce voyage maritime pourrai être réduit avec une participation identique à celle reçue par la SATA qui visait à développer le transport aérien... au moins vers certaines îles.
(Un peu hors sujet, mais je rappelle que le flambant neuf aéroport de Pico, n’a toujours droit depuis Lisbonne et en pleine saison touristique qu’a un demi vol (le mardi en plus) par semaine alors que son ancêtre Faialense en reçoit 2 voir 3 quotidiennement, ce sujet fera l’objet d’une prochaine humeur dans le blog Espaço Talassa)

O PONTA DELGADA MORREU… VIVA O PONTA DELGADA*

A vida é feita de paradoxos e a minha não escapa a essa regra!

Como posso falar de economia sustentável, de turismo responsável, de encontros imediatos com golfinhos e baleias, enquanto passo a minha vida a colocar pessoas em aviões?

Os transportes, e sobretudo o transporte aéreo, são responsáveis pela emissão de uma parte considerável dos gases com efeito de estufa (e não apenas o dióxido de carbono, pois existem outros bem piores…). Actualmente 100% das pessoas que visitam o arquipélago utilizam esse meio de transporte, pouco ecológico, simplesmente porque não têm outra escolha.

Assim, para limpar a minha consciência, apresento aqui 3 sugestões para vossa apreciação:
1. Sensibilizar as pessoas que nos visitam para o facto que a realização de uma viagem não tem impacto sobre o ambiente. Os Açores servem de modelo para o caminho que toma a humanidade: aqui podemos tocar o poder da natureza, mas também podemos sentir a sua fragilidade, através da diminuição da biodiversidade… Proponho assim que todos plantem uma árvore autóctone, tomando como exemplo (mau) a ilha da Páscoa;
2. Dar tempo ao visitante de apreciar as ilhas, convidando-os a permanecer no mínimo uma semana na Região e/ou 3 noites em cada ilha. Congressos, fins-de-semana prolongados, circuitos açoreanos inter-ilhas, voos charter (modelo sueco…) deveriam ser banidos, por reflectirem um modelo turístico ambientalmente agressivo. Sem chegar-se ao exagero de proibir turistas com estadias inferiores a 7 dias (que até existe em alguns destinos), é politicamente possível taxar as estadias curtas e aligeirar fiscalmente os operadores que propõem as estadias de duração média.
3. E sobretudo restabelecer uma ligação marítima regular entre Portugal Continental e os Açores (Açores e não apenas São Miguel). O navio é 18 vezes menos poluentes que o avião. Os actuais navios de cruzeiro são capazes de realizar esta travessia em menos de 40 horas, com os seguintes pontos fortes
a. Em primeiro lugar para tomar tempo suavemente, afinal os turistas estão de férias! Desembarquei pela primeira vez nos Açores em 1987 num dia de bruma (compreendi aí a noção de “Ilhas de Bruma”) e senti a vegetação exuberante da ilha lilás antes de ver revelar-se à proa da minha embarcação “Tyl le mutin”, a maravilhosa silhueta do Ilhéu das Cabras e depois docemente, quase sensualmente, a silhueta do Monte Brasil, ainda ressonante da noite das São Joaninas. Que contraste, quando agora a bordo de um nervoso A310 mastigando uma leve refeição oferecida pela TAP, interrogo-me se este “aromático” tubo de alumínio alado será capaz de alinhar-se com a pista ou se a minha bagagem seguiu viagem ou não.
b. Ter espaço para descobrir as ilhas e tomar o horizonte azul do mar açoreano como referência, que é na realidade o que procuram os turistas que nos visitam. Nada mais viola a intimidade, do que após uma semana de trek pelos vulcões da Atlântida, ter que compartilhar um apertado espaço, sentado na confortável cadeira do avião, desenhada para anões, do que ouvir os gritos de susto do Homo sapiens sentado ao meu lado, o qual não foi prevenido do carácter desportivo dos nossos aeroportos… Sim, tenho medo de andar de avião! Mas sobretudo prefiro imaginar-me a tomar um aperitivo na piscina à popa de um paquete, com o pôr-de-sol sobre o Atlântico como pano de fundo, seguindo os golfinhos em direcção aos Açores.
c. O transporte marítimo poderá responder às necessidades de numerosos dos nossos clientes, que preferem o navio por motivos ambientais, explicadas anteriormente, mas também porque poderiam embarcar maior quantidade de bagagem, algo muito importante, se pensarmos que muitos fazem mergulho, por exemplo.
d. Rentabilizar as instalações portuárias em curso de adaptação, criar postos de emprego ao redor desses mesmos portos e servir mais democraticamente o coração do arquipélago, o triângulo. A tarifa desta viagem deveria ser apoiado, na mesma medida do realizado para os voos SATA e TAP, pelo menos para algumas ilhas. (Um pouco fora de assunto, mas relembro que o novíssimo Aeroporto do Pico continua a não ter direito a voos directos de Lisboa. Mesmo na época turística alta, apenas um voo às terças, enquanto que o ancestral vizinho aeroporto faialense recebe 2 ou 3 diários. Este assunto será objecto do próximo humor do blog Espaço Talassa)

PONTA DELAGA IS DEAD, ALL HAIL PONTA DELGADA*

Life is full of paradoxes and mine does not escape to this rule!

How can I speak of sustainable economy, responsible tourism, “soft encounters” with dolphins and whales, while I spend my life placing people in airplanes?

Transports, and over all the air transportation, are responsible for the emission of a considerable part of the gases with greenhouse effect (and not only the carbon dioxide, as there are other well worse...). Currently 100% of the people who visit the archipelago use this unecological transport, simply because they do not have a choice.

Thus, to clean my conscience, I present 3 suggestions for your appreciation:
1. We should make people who visit us aware of the fact that making a trip does have an important impact on the environment. The Azores serves as a model for the way humanity is taking: here we can touch the power of Nature, but also we can feel its fragility, through the reduction of biodiversity... I consider thus that everybody should plant a indigenous tree, taking as example (bad) the Easter Island;
2. We should give some time to the visitor to appreciate the islands, inviting him to remain at least one week in the Region and/or 3 nights in each island. Congresses, long weekends, Inter-islands circuits and charter flights (Swedish model...) should be banished, as they reflect an environmentally aggressive tourism model. Without getting extreme and forbidding a tourist to stay less than 7 days (some destinations do), it is politically possible to tax short stays and lessen taxes for operators who propose stays of average duration.
3. And overall to re-establish a regular maritime line between Continental Portugal and the Azores (Azores and not only S. Miguel island). The ship is 18 times less pollutant than the airplane. Cruise ships are able to carry this trip in less than 40 hours, and also:
a. In first place it allows to take time softly, after all tourists are on vacation! I disembarked for the first time in the Azores in 1987: one misty day (I understood then the notion "Mist Islands") and felt the exuberant vegetation of the lilac island before seeing the wonderful silhouette of the Ilhéu das Cabras to the bow of my sailingboat "Tyl le mutin", and later got to the sweet, almost sensually silhouette of the Monte Brasil, still resonant of the São Joaninas (St. John) festivities. Quite a huge contrast, comparing to the "aromatical" winged aluminium pipe A310, where I chew a light meal offered by TAP (Portuguese air flight company) and interrogate myself if it will be able to line up itself with the track or if my luggage followed this trip or not.
b. To have space to discover the islands and to take the blue horizon of the Azorean sea as a reference: this is really what tourists look when visiting us. After one week trekking on the Atlantis volcanoes, nothing is more violating, than having to share one tiny space, seated in the “comfortable” seat of the airplane, drawn for dwarves, or to hear the scare shouts of the Homo sapiens seated my side, whom was not prevented of the sporting character of our airports... Yes, I fear planes! But over all I prefer to imagine myself taking an aperitif by the swimming pool on the cruise ships’ poop, with the sunset on the Atlantic as background, following the dolphins to the Azores.
c. Maritime transport will be able to answer the necessities of numerous of our customers, who prefer the ship for environmentally reasons or because that way they could embark greater amount of luggage, something very important, if you think that many come here for diving, for example.
d. To make port installations profitable, to create jobs around these ports and to serve more democratically the core of the archipelago, the Triangle, comprising Pico, Faial and S. Jorge islands. This trips’ tariff would have to be supported, in the same measure of the carried out for SATA and TAP flights, at least for some islands. (A little out of subject, but I remember you that the brand new Pico Airport discontinues to have direct flights from/to Lisbon, while its ancestral neighbour Airport from Faial receives 2 or 3 daily ones, during summer. This subject will be object next time of Espaço Talassa blog humour)

O mar é azul porque as árvores são verdes. Uma curiosa e erudita transformação que coloca em jogo a luz solar, o ozono, o dióxido de carbono, o oxigénio,…

As actividades humanas são infelizmente poluentes e o turismo não escapa a esta regra.

Sabe que para chegar aos Açores desde uma grande capital europeia, um avião emite cerca de 1 250 kg de dióxido de carbono (CO2) por passageiro! Um navio produz 50 vezes menos. O transporte aéreo é responsável por 3% das emissões de gases com efeito de estufa (GEE) dentro da União Europeia.

As florestas de jovens árvores são grandes consumidoras de dióxido de carbono, transformando-o em alimento (hidratos de carbono) e oxigénio através do processo de fotossíntese. Então, quando visitarem as Lajes do Pico, porque não realizar um pequeno gesto simbólico pela Terra e plantar uma árvore? Afinal, as pequenas gotas de água transformam-se num rio… E os gestos simbólicos acordam a consciência!

Sob a égide da UNESCO através da campanha da UNEP “Plantemos para o planeta”, a partir de 2008, o Espaço Talassa compromete-se a plantar uma árvore por cada hóspede do nosso hotel e por cada passageiro que embarque nos nossos barcos.

Cerca de 5000 plantas da Laurissilva e endémicas dos Açores, que poderão plantar com as vossas próprias mãos, admirar quando regressarem ao Pico dentro de alguns anos, ou simplesmente como herança para as gerações futuras.

Para que as 5 000 cores de esmeralda que cobrem as ilhas açoreanas continuem a reflectir-se no profundo ecrã azul do Atlântico… As baleias ficarão ainda mais azuis!

Human activities are unfortunately polluting, and tourism does not escape this rule.

Do you know, for instance, that to fly to the Azores from a large European capital, a plane emits approximately 1,250 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per passenger? A boat produces 50 times less. Air transport is responsible for 3% of the greenhouse gases emissions in the European Union.

Forests are large carbon dioxide consumers, which they transform into food (glucose) and oxygen by the photosynthesis process... Therefore when coming to Lajes do Pico, why not make a small, but symbolic gesture for Mother Earth and plant a tree? After all, the sum of all tiny water drops makes a river.... and the symbolic gestures awake the common conscience!

Under the aegis of UNESCO, through the countryside of the UNEP "Plant for the planet", Espaço Talassa is committing itself to plant a tree from 2008 on, for each visitor which remains in our hotel and for each passenger who embarks on our boats.
Approximately 5 000 seedlings of Laurisilva and endemic vegetation of the Azores will be available, so that you may plant, and admire in a few years or quite simply leave for the future generations.

So that the 5 000 emerald colours which cover the islands from the Azores continue to reflect the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean.... Even the whales will be bluer.

Durante a semana dos baleeiros nas Lajes do Pico, o Espaço Talassa testou a sua campanha de marketing para o ano de… 2015
Entretanto a concorrência replicou e baixou os preços ainda mais, e já em vigor para o ano de 2007.
Caro colega, se ainda não o faz, prepare-se para pagar para trabalhar. No próximo ano durante o “Bom Jesus” ou na “Semana do Mar”, proponho um novo slogan: “Espaço Talassa oferece 15 euros para observação de baleias, golfinhos incluídos”… Nada mais e veremos quem consegue melhor que isto!

Dear colleague, if you still don’t do it, prepare yourself to pay to work. Next year during “Bom Jesus” or in “Sea Week”, I propose a new slogan: “Espaço Talassa offers 15 euros for whale watching, dolphins included”… No more! And we will see who can cover our offer !

Nadar com Golfinhos

Resolvi lançar-me de cabeça e espero não me aleijar… 1ª abordagem sobre
“Nadar com Golfinhos”

Nadar com golfinhos é um sonho para a maior parte dos nossos clientes,
mas muitas vezes torna-se num verdadeiro pesadelo para os animais.
Contudo trata-se de uma boa receita diária para as empresas, incluindo
a minha, Espaço Talassa.
Sempre defendi que devíamos assumir uma posição radical e oposta:
permitir a natação com todas as espécies de cetáceos ou então com
nenhuma. A solução híbrida na qual nos encontramos coloca-nos sob fogo,
tanto dos ecologistas e/ou biólogos radicais, como dos ultraliberais,
para os quais tudo deverá ser autorizado.
Passada a fase da ingenuidade, que nos acompanhou nos primeiros anos e
as primeiras tentativas na água, que orientaram as nossas primeiras
milhas nos mares açoreanos, a velha questão continua premente:
Devemos continuar a propor a actividade de natação com os golfinhos nos
Açores?

Logo, colocada a questão, tentarei pesar os argumentos favoráveis e
contra. Aqui estão os resultados:
Prós:
• Boas receitas para as empresas;
• Actividade que permite prolongar um pouco a época turística durante o
Outono;
• Um encontro inesquecível e fora do comum com estes animais.
Contra:
• Risco de acidente para os clientes, que pode acontecer a uma das
empresas, mas que prejudicará todo o sector;
• Forte impacte sobre os animais, sobretudo porque os grupos de
golfinhos durante a época alta turística estão cheios de crias e também
porque alguns desses grupos são espécies residentes (os Roazes, os
Moleiros e, quase de certeza, os Golfinhos-comuns);
• Esta actividade dificulta o trabalho dos barcos de observação e a
qualidade de observação é inferior, já que os golfinhos alvo da natação
com pessoas, têm tendência a evitar contacto com mais barcos;
• Desrespeito da legislação regional, uma vez que para nadar com os
golfinhos, não existe outra solução que não se já realizar uma
aproximação para a frente do grupo, cortando a sua rota, e muitas vezes
a menos de 50 metros de distância do grupo;
• As directivas, legislação ou código de conduta internacional são mais
favoráveis à interdição da natação (WDCS, IFAW…) fornecem argumentos
suplementares àqueles que nos criticam, com razão, por esta actividade.
A resposta é clara e sem apelo: é melhor rendermo-nos à evidência e
parar com a natação com os cetáceos! No entanto é preciso ter em
consideração o impacte comercial desta acção, que resultaria na perda
de uma boa fatia de clientes de alguns operadores, incluindo o Espaço
Talassa. É por isso que proponho:
• Concessão de um prazo de 5 anos a todos os operadores para procurarem
novos nichos ou segmentos de mercado, estabelecendo-se a interdição no
ano de 2013, e aplicável à época de 2014;
• Tomar medidas imediatas, na forma de uma nova portaria, para limitar
o impacte sobre os animais e os riscos de acidentes:
o A natação só poderia ser proposta em barcos específicos, de reduzida
dimensão (máximo 8 metros de comprimento);
o Estabelecimento de uma licença especial para natação, com o número de
barcos autorizados para a natação a serem limitados a um máximo de 50%
do número total de licenças de whale watching emitidas a essa empresa;
o Perda de prioridade do barco de natação sobre um barco de observação;
o Não misturar, no mesmo barco, pessoas de natação com pessoas de
observação de cetáceos;
o O enquadramento da actividade deve ser assegurada por um profissional
(o marinheiro, por exemplo) com curso de Dive Master ou algo
equivalente. O skipper deverá também possuir curso de primeiros
socorros;
o Interdição de realização de natação numa saída única,
estabelecendo-se que cada pessoa terá que sair, no mínimo, 3 vezes para
o mar;
o O cliente terá que fornecer, obrigatoriamente, um certificado médico,
demonstrando ter capacidades físicas para realizar a actividade;
o Obrigação de utilização de fato de mergulho, para limitar os
acidentes de hipotermia, mas também para melhorar a flutuabilidade,
permitindo ao cliente boiar no mar mais facilmente em caso de acidente
ou fatiga;

Estou certo que esta situação será revista rapidamente a nível legal.
Espero as vossas ideias e comentários e outras acções concebíveis.

I’ve decided to throw myself to the sharks, and make this first approach on swimming with dolphins.

Swimming with dolphins is a dream for most of our clients, but sometimes it becomes a really nightmare for the animals. Nevertheless it comprises na important income for tourism companies, including mine – Espaço Talassa.

I’ve always defended we should assume a radical and opposing position: permission to swim with every species of cetaceans or with none. The hybrid solution in which we find ourselves now puts us in a delicate situation: on one side the radical environmental groups and on the other, the ultraliberals, who defend everything should be allowed.

Now that the naivety which accompanied us in our first years has passed, the old question arouses: Should we continue to propose our clients to swim with dolphins in the Azores?

As I pose this question, I’ll try to measure the advantages and the inconvenient:

For:
- Good income for companies
- This activity allows to prolong the season a bit more
- Unforgettable and unusual encounter with this animals

Against:
- Accident risk, which may happen to someone, but could be harmful for the entire sector: politicians and biologists would have no problem in stopping this activity definitely
- Strong impact on the animals, mainly because dolphin pods have a lot of baby’s during the tourist season, and among them some are resident (Tursiops, Gramous, and almost for sure, Delphis)
- This activity harms observation boats work: “swim” dolphins avoid boats and usually swim away from all boats
- Regional Law is not respected, because to allow people to swim with dolphins, a boat must approach from the front of the group, and usually nearer than the 50 meters allowed.
- Directives and Legislation in Europe and around the World are supporting the interdiction to swim with dolphins (WDCS, IFAW

The answer is clear: we should surrender to the obvious and stop swimming with dolphins. But we should consider the commercial impact of the loss of many customers of certain operators (of which Espaço Talassa). This is why I propose:
- 5 years should be given, so that operators could search new market segments, and then on 2013 the interdiction should enter into force on 2014

Immediate measures should be taken through a new “portaria”, limiting this activity impact on animals and accident risks:
- Swimming should only be allowed on a specific small boat (no more than 8 meters long)
- A special swimming license should be released, limiting the allowed “swimming boats” to 50% of all licenses emitted for one company
- Swimming boats should not have priority above observation boats
- It shouldn’t be allowed to mix on the same boat, swimmers and observers.
- Number of swimmers per boat should be limited to 8
- Crew should assure safety: one should be dive master, and also have first aid course
- It should be interdicted to swim on a single trip, establishing that everyone should have 3 trips to the sea, at least
- Customers should supply medical certificate
- Customers should use rubber suit, to limit hypothermia, and to allow people to float better, in case of injury or fatigue.

I’m waiting now for your comments, ideas and other possible actions.

I think this subject will be revised very fast. And I’m afraid that the politic decision will be oriented by biologists, with the only concern to protect what they consider as their private garden. We should not forget the fraud about the portaria regulating our activity and creating the São Miguel exception. But this subject will be discussed in the future. Due to our experience in the sea and with tha animals, we should be honestly heard and understood! Let’s show everybody that we fell responsible to find a solution

Nos Açores a actividade de observação de cetáceos não funciona como deveria.

Os bons sentimentos e as grandes utopias dos anos 90 foram substituídos pelo apelo do lucro rápido e fácil. Alguns operadores tornaram-se mesmo nos campeões de “vira-casacas”!

É pena, porque nós tivemos realmente a possibilidade de construir um modelo turístico diferente, baseado no respeito pelos animais e pelas pessoas que nos visitam…

Os Açores têm potencial para isso!

Quero acreditar que ainda não é tarde demais e que amanhã consigamos responder às aspirações de um turista cada vez mais exigente e ao mesmo tempo combater o desafio da poluição global (económica, social, cultural, ambiental, desenvolvimento não sustentável etc.), ou a nossa actividade estará longe se ser inocente. Nesse caso seremos julgados pelas gerações futuras.

É por este motivo que é preciso inventar um espaço de partilha entre os operadores açoreanos (em substituição da moribunda associação AAEWW), aberto também a todos aqueles com ideias construtivas, quer sejam profissionais de qualquer canto deste mundo, quer sejam clientes, políticos, investigadores ou militantes de associações de preservação do meio ambiente…

Este blog dirige-se a todas as pessoas que não são demagógicas nem tímidas, mas que querem encontrar uma dinâmica de fundo positiva e respeitosa que nos permita sair do atoleiro que é a vulgarização do destino Açores.

Aqui trataremos dos problemas concretos ligados à nossa actividade. Afim de facilitar a comunicação, proponho que de futuro sejam utilizadas apenas dois idiomas: o português e o inglês.

In the Azores whale watching isn’t working as it should.

The good feelings and great utopias of the 90’s were substituted by the appeal for easy and quick profit. Some operators have even become the turncoat champions, with the politicians blessing.

It’s a shame, because we really had the possibility to build a different tourism model, based in the respect for the animals and for the people who visit us...

The Azores have the potential for it!
I want to believe that it is not too late for us and hope that tomorrow we will be able to answer the tourist aspirations, each time more demanding. At the same time I want to believe that we can fight the challenge of the global pollution (economical, social, cultural, environmental, etc.), or our activity will be far to be itself innocent. In this in case we will be judged by the future generations.

This is the reason why it is necessary to create an exchange space among the azorean operators (in substitution of the dying association AAEWW), opening it to all those with constructive ideas, people from all corners of the world, being whether customers, politicians, researchers or associations of preservation of the environment.

This blog addresses to all of you, who have no wooden language nor are a shrinking violet, but to everybody who wants to find a positive dynamic, that allows us to leave the dead end that is the vulgarization of the destination Azores.

Here we will deal with the concrete problems in our activity. To ease the communication, I suggest that only two languages should be used in the future: portuguese and english.
